Mary Alice Martin

Mary Alice Martin

Howdy! My name is Mary Alice Martin LM, CPM and I’m a native, baby-loving Houstonian! Growing up I would sit in front of the television and watch reality shows about childbirth—I was obsessed, but also terrified. The thought of one day going through labor and delivery really scared me, and I didn’t realize there were alternatives to what I was watching and to my mother’s own horrific birth experiences. At the ripe age of sixteen I read a memoir written by a midwife and I was hooked; I just knew that I was called to make experiences of childbirth and motherhood more peaceful and meaningful for families.

I attended Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, and at this small, liberal arts, women’s college I had the opportunity to cater my education to my own interests and goals. Through interdisciplinary classes I was challenged to think deeply about the world into which babies are born and in which women become mothers. My degree is in Critical Social Thought with a minor in Gender Studies, and I had the opportunity to write an undergraduate thesis exploring the politics of midwifery and motherhood represented in documentary films.
Doula work gave me the opportunity to bring my academic work into the “real world.” I was trained as a DONA birth doula in 2012. I’ve supported families through epidurals and medication-free births, home and hospital births, VBACs and twins. In addition to my work as a birth doula I have worked as a postpartum doula and and am the Manager and Editor at a motherhood-focused media company, Baby Chick.
I graduated from the Association of Texas Midwives Midwifery Training Program after my academic and hands-on training that spanned from July of 2015 to December of 2018. I had the privilege to apprentice under Houston midwives Nanci Stanley, LM, CPM and Jackie Griggs, CNM. I am a Texas Licensed Midwife (LM) and a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) I hold current certifications in CPR and Neonatal Resuscitation. I am currently offering midwifery services through Midwife in the Heights.
I believe that every family deserves respect, love, and informed consent along this journey, and I would be honored to travel with you.
